Ready for the season! #HsO @CFrankamp_23 Man!! Bootcamp is a wrap!! @b_greene14 Bill Self’s 2014 Basketball Boot Camp is over. ... sort of. Self’s 16 Kansas University players successfully completed a series of timed sprints and other drills from 6 to 7 a.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, with the 12th-year coach stating “the guys did great in making their times. I was very impressed with all of them.”... Now, in the wake of intense early-morning conditioning the past week and a half, Self today and Friday turns the reins over to Marine Eric Kapitulik, who is bringing “The Program” to town. “The Program” is a physically and mentally grueling two-day regimen that many schools in the country have had their athletes participate in, including Notre Dame, Maryland, Michigan, Ohio State and Texas, to name a few. …“It doesn’t have anything to do with me or our staff. It’s a Marine basically showing our guys some things I think he’s probably learned throughout his time that makes them more mentally tough and more of a team,” Self said. “One thing with so many young guys and not a senior on scholarship on our team, we need to develop some leaders. Certainly we’ll rely on some really young kids to be in different roles, to be different-type leaders. This will teach us how to be better leaders, how to be better teammates, how to pull together when things get a little fragmented,” Self added. …As far as the traditional Self Boot Camp, Self said scholarship freshmen Cliff Alexander, Devonté Graham, Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk and Kelly Oubre Jr. all performed well. “I’d say on a scale of 1 to 10, they were all 8s and 9s. They were good. All of them made their times without any problems,” Self said. “They didn’t just get through it, they tried to really push through it. Svi, Devonté, Kelly and Cliff showed me a little bit more than what I thought they would have this early in their careers from a mental-toughness standpoint.” LJW The University of Kansas men's and women's basketball teams will ceremoniously tip off their 2014-15 seasons at the 30th annual Late Night in the Phog Friday, Oct. 10, in Allen Fieldhouse. The 2014 Late Night in the Phog, presented by Hy-Vee, will run from 6:30 p.m. to approximately 9:30 p.m. Admission is free and will remain a ticketless, first-come, first-served event; no re-entry passes will be distributed. Doors will open at 3 p.m., and children 12 and under will not be admitted without an accompanying adult. The Fieldhouse doors will be closed when the arena reaches capacity. Kansas Athletics has announced it will take extra steps to ensure the fun and safety of all attending fans:
With school in session Oct. 10, university parking lots will be restricted by permit until 5 p.m., with the exception of Lot 90 located across Naismith Drive from Allen Fieldhouse; that lot will be available for public parking at no charge starting at noon. Public parking will also be available in the parking garage just north of Allen Fieldhouse for Late Night in the Phog after 5 p.m.; cost will be $5 per vehicle. As is the tradition at Late Night, fans are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items, which Kansas Athletics will donate to "Just Food" of Douglas County. Just Food will also be outside Allen Fieldhouse taking cash donations for those not able to bring a food item. Time Warner Cable SportsChannel will oversee the television production of Late Night, which will be seen live on the Jayhawk TV Network, including ESPN3. Nate Bukaty and former men's basketball guard Greg Gurley will serve as hosts. Additionally, 610 Sports Radio in Kansas City and KLWN Radio in Lawrence will provide coverage of the festivities. KU Athletics: Everything you need to know about Late Night in the Phog ![]() Table packages are sold out for “Celebrating 60 Years,” an Oct. 27 gathering in Allen Fieldhouse to feature KU coach Bill Self, plus former KU coaches Larry Brown, Ted Owens and Roy Williams. Emcee for the program will be ESPN’s Jay Bilas. Fifty tables, seating 10 individuals per table, were sold for $5,000 each. Seating remains available in the stands at kuathletics.com or by calling 1-800-34HAWKS. Kansas celebrates 60 years of Allen Fieldhouse on 10/27. We got it done that night Jayhawkers. @USFBBallCoach (Rex Walters) The honor, if you want to call it that, goes to the Dead Man of the Day. Sometimes the Dead Man is sprawled out on the locker room floor, a hand covering his face. Sometimes he is hugging the top of a plastic trash bin. Sometimes, he, quite literally, looks dead. The honor also has rules. If you are a member of the Kansas basketball team, for instance, you don’t want to be the dead man. That goes without saying. Bill Self’s annual boot camp began on Monday morning, and that means two weeks of grueling workouts, early-morning wake-up calls, and lots of exhausted players. So, no, you don’t want to be the target when junior forward Jamari Traylor pulls out his smart phone, snaps a picture and posts the Dead Man to his Instagram account — a funny blend of inside jokes, old photos and pictures with puppies. “There are some days where you can’t help but lie on the floor or crash,” says sophomore guard Wayne Selden Jr. “But I try to not be the victim.” Selden has a rather simple strategy for this. He usually tries to assist Traylor during the daily hunt for the dead man. …On Thursday afternoon, in the hours before another full-squad workout, Selden spoke about his offseason goals and his new statu_s as a veteran. He believes he could play some point guard this season — if that’s needed. He believes he could play on the wing as well. “I feel like I could play the point, play the two, play the three, wherever they need me to play,” Selden said. “I feel I could do any of those. And it’s more so guarding that position would be the challenge.” It’s not that Selden will be needed at the point guard spot — though some added versatility would be helpful. The Jayhawks enter the fall with three players capable of earning minutes at the one. Sophomores Frank Mason and Conner Frankamp return to the backcourt, while freshman Devonte’ Graham is an intriguing talent from Brewster Academy. KC Star The Kansas Board of Regents on Wednesday authorized construction of new apartments near Allen Fieldhouse for Kansas University men's basketball players.
The regents also approved a request from KU to name the apartments in honor of Marie S. McCarthy. She is the late mother of Kent McCarthy, who with his wife, Missy, made a lead gift earlier this year to finance the project. They have donated to KU for many years. The amount of that gift has not been released. Both actions by the regents were unanimous and made without comment. KU Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little said Marie S. McCarthy, who died in 2013, attended KU on a math scholarship "and maintained a lifelong love of the university." Construction of the apartments is expected to start within the next few months with scheduled completion set for August 2015. The first phase of the project is expected to cost $11.9 million and will feature furnished two- and three-bedroom units, common spaces and an enclosed athletic court. KU officials have said the apartments are needed to help recruit top talent. When the lead gift was announced, KU men's basketball coach Bill Self said, "These things are very, very significant for the benefit, development and overall experience of our student-athletes. We want them to be comfortable and have the same type of living conditions as the programs we're recruiting against." The apartments will house 39 students, some of them on the men's basketball team. Under NCAA requirements, no more than 49 percent of the residents will be student-athletes. LJW Former Kansas University point guard Tyshawn Taylor has signed a contract with Dynamo Moscow of the Russian Superleague. Terms were not disclosed. Taylor, 24, played for the Maine Red Claws of the NBA Developmental League last season. He started the season with the Brooklyn Nets. He was traded to the New Orleans Pelicans and was waived in January. Link The Allen Fieldhouse trash cans went unused for the first day of Kansas basketball boot camp. The two-week conditioning program — a staple of coach Bill Self’s 12 seasons in Lawrence — began Monday without any Jayhawks losing their breakfasts. “We made it through day one just fine,” KU sophomore forward Landen Lucas said. Freshman Kelly Oubre — sitting next to Lucas at an interview table Monday afternoon — chimed in as well. “You’re right,” he said with a smile. “We’re tough, man.” …KU freshman Svi Mykhailiuk, who only arrived on KU’s campus last week, participated in Monday’s boot camp. “He’s in great shape. I don’t know what they feed him over there … ” Oubre said with a grin. “He’s in great shape man. He’s good.” Oubre said KU’s players welcomed the Ukraine native “with open arms.” “He’s been getting along great,” Oubre said. “He’s a young, young, young kid, but he’s maturing fast. That’s all we can really ask for.” TCJ So long summer, it's countdown time to Kansas Jayhawks basketball! I hope you enjoyed the vacation, I know I did! And so begins my news links boot camp. Pay attention or you'll be running laps! |
