KUAD:  Pregame Notes

It’s going to take a roster to learn all the new faces on the University of Northern Colorado men’s basketball team.

However, if progressing familiarity breeds success, coach B.J. Hill’s bunch might be alright.
There will be obstacles, though.

Hill said that the Bears will face the “second toughest” schedule in his six seasons as the team’s coach.

That starts with tonight’s 6 p.m. game at No. 4 Kansas University at the renowned Allen Fieldhouse and hopefully ends with a trip to the NCAA Championships.

Inbetween, there’s a big learning curve awaiting the Bears, who lost 1,000-point scorers Tevin Svihovec and Tim Huskisson to graduation.

…Playing against a storied program like KU will be a tall task to open the season.

“I want to see a team that doesn’t back down,” Hill said. “I want to see a team that takes everything we’ve worked on in practice and carry it over to the game.

“If they can do that in the KU environment and in that venue ... it will tell me a lot about what they could do the rest of the season.”

#TBT Mario's Miracle

11/12/2015

Now that former Miami Heat guard Mario Chalmers has been traded to the Memphis Grizzlies, Grizz fans, who also happen to be Memphis Tigers fans, are taking a stand.

One such fan started a Change.org petition asking NBA broadcasters to not show clips of then-Jayhawks guard Chalmer’s overtime-forcing 3-pointer from the Kansas-Memphis 2008 National Championship Game. From the petition:

We already have to suffer through the embarrassment that is the Matt Barnes media circus. Please don’t make us suffer through constant “Steve, take a look at this (clip from 2008 title game): That’s current Memphis Grizzlies back-up PG standing over the entire city of Memphis, dropping his shorts, and pooping on the hopes and dreams of 676,660 people.”

Or

“Wow, Clark, I wonder how many Memphis fans remember this…(clip rolls).”

We all remember it, and have been collectively flinching at the mention of the most commonly forgotten state ever since.

Also, what Memphis fan would pass up an opportunity to rag on John Calipari?

While I have you here, it should also be noted that Hall of Fame coach John Calipari DIDN’T FOUL CHALMERS ON THE POSSESSION LEADING TO THE 3. YOU HAD A FOUL TO GIVE, CAL. WTF BUDDY.

Anyway, please sign this petition. We, as a city, and as a fan base, would greatly appreciate it if we didn’t have to hear about this.

The petition didn’t have much steam (it was only asking for a 100 signatures, which doesn’t feel like a lot), so sorry Memphis fans. You’ll just have to grin and bear it.

KUAD: Pregame Notes

We want to alert our WIBW-TV viewers that Tuesday’s KU basketball game will not be on channel 13. The KU Athletic Department signed an agreement with Cox Cable in northeast Kansas and that means WIBW-TV does not have access to the games.

TGIF! And Perry!

11/6/2015

Picture

It doesn’t matter who you talk to about Perry Ellis, they say the same things. And they express the same admiration and appreciation for a young man who has grown up just as they thought he would.

Ellis is Kansas’ 6-foot-8 senior forward. The journey from Mueller Elementary to Brooks Middle School to Heights High to KU has been incredible. From a man among boys as a young basketball player, to a four-time state champion and All-State player at Heights, to a McDonald’s All-American his senior year, to carrying a 4.0 grade-point average and to now being a potential player of the year in the Big 12.

Basketball, though, doesn’t begin to tell his story. It’s one told best by those who have known him the longest, who don’t necessarily see him as an athlete first and foremost and who appreciate all of Ellis’ unique qualities and are amazed that his great amount of success on the basketball floor and in the classroom haven’t changed him one iota.

Let’s start when Ellis was in kindergarten at Mueller. His teacher, Carolyn Bryant, talks about him in the way KU coach Bill Self might today.

GAMEDAY! Kansas Hosts Exhibition vs Pitt State

KUAD: Pitt State vs KU Pregame Notes

At 7 p.m. Wednesday, as No. 4 Kansas opens its exhibition schedule against Pittsburg State at Allen Fieldhouse, the adjustment process will continue. Nine days before its regular-season opener against Northern Colorado on Nov. 13, the Jayhawks will take the floor for the first of two exhibition matchups against in-state opponents. The KU freshmen will get their first dose of Allen Fieldhouse — though big man Cheick Diallo is not expected to play while he waits for an NCAA ruling on his academic eligibility — and the Jayhawks’ veteran nucleus will receive its first test-run of the 2015-16 season. Among the top priorities for Self: Getting his guys acquainted with a new style.

Let’s start here. Officials have been directed to crack down on hand-checking on the perimeter and excessive contact in the paint. In specific terms, defenders will not be allowed to use an “arm bar” to impede the progress of a dribbler. Putting two hands on an offensive player on the perimeter will also result in an automatic foul.
